Quality-based Price Discrimination: Evidence from Internet Retailers’ Shipping Options
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper tests various implications of quality-based price discrimination theory in the context of internet book retailers’ shipping menus. Many internet retailers create quality variants of a homogeneous good by bundling it with several shipping options that differ by delivery time. This practice can allow retailers to extract further surplus from consumers through quality-based price discrimination. We find that the design of shipping menus offered by large retailers is consistent with main implications of quality-based price discrimination theory. Fringe sellers, however, do not appear to engage in price discrimination based on quality. Published by Elsevier Inc on behalf of New York University.

Retailers' Use of Shipping Cost Strategies: Free Shipping or Partitioned Prices?
The Internet has radically reduced the cost of collecting and distributing information. Consequently, researchers initially predicted that the resulting price transparency would drive prices toward a single market price. However, this has largely not happened, partly because retailers use shipping costs to make prices less comparable. Using data on 517,048 offers of 895 retailers from a leading...

Our research empirically analyzes consumer behavior at Internet shopbots— sites that allow consumers to make “one-click” price comparisons for product offerings from multiple retailers. By allowing researchers to observe exactly what information the consumer is shown and their search behavior in response to this information, shopbot data has unique strengths for analyzing consumer behavior. Fur...

Mail-order and internet sellers must decide how customers pay shipping charges. Typically, these sellers choose between two pricing policies: either “uniform pricing,” where the firm delivers to any customer at a fixed delivery charge (that may be volume dependent), or “mill pricing,” where the firm bills the customer a distance-related shipping charge. This paper studies price competition betw...
متن کاملFrictionless Commerce? A Comparison of Internet and Conventional Retailers
There have been many claims that the Internet represents a new nearly “frictionless market.” Our research empirically analyzes the characteristics of the Internet as a channel for two categories of homogeneous products—books and CDs. Using a data set of over 8,500 price observations collected over a period of 15 months, we compare pricing behavior at 41 Internet and conventional retail outlets....

Retailers have the option to distribute their products via the traditional met...
